The chair, today also known as Chiavarina or Tiffany, was designed by the Italian master carpenter Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi at the beginning of the 19th century, who made the construction of the conventional rung chair particularly stable and robust by means of his own developed slot system. With the Chiavari construction, the natural wood chair acquired an elasticity, lightness and resistance that could hardly be surpassed.
