- Direct-coated chipboard: These panels are coated with a thin layer of melamine resin directly. They are less resistant and wear after a few years. Thin plastic films: Thin PVC or PET films can be laminated onto chipboard or MDF panels to create a decorative finish. Typically less robust and durable than HPL. Simple paint finishes: Wood or chipboard can be painted directly. While it can produce a nice finish, it does not offer the same protection or durability as HPL.
