- Direct-coat chipboard: These panels are coated with a thin layer of melamine resin directly. They are less resistant and tend to wear after a few years. Thin plastic films: Thin PVC or PET films can be laminated onto chipboard or MDF to create a decorative finish. These are generally less robust and less durable than HPL. Simple paint finishes: Wood or chipboard can be painted directly. While this can produce a nice finish, it does not provide the same protection or durability as HPL.
