- Direct-coated particleboards: These are coated with a thin layer of melamine resin. They are less resistant and wear out after a few years. Thin plastic films: Thin PVC or PET films can be laminated onto particleboards or MDF to create a decorative finish. These are generally less robust and less durable than HPL. Simple paint finishes: Wood or particleboards can be painted directly. While this can produce a nice finish, it does not provide the same protection or longevity as HPL.
