- Directly coated chipboards: These boards are coated with a thin layer of melamine resin. They are less resistant and deteriorate after a few years. Thin plastic foils: Thin PVC or PET films can be laminated onto chipboards or MDF boards to create a decorative finish. These are generally less durable and long-lasting than HPL. Simple paint coats: Wood or chipboards can be painted directly. While this may produce a nice finish, it does not offer the same protection or longevity as HPL.
