- Direct-coated particleboard: These boards are directly coated with a thin layer of melamine resin. They are less durable and begin to wear out after a few years. Thin plastic films: Thin PVC or PET films can be laminated onto particleboard or MDF boards to create a decorative finish. These are generally less robust and less durable than HPL. Simple paint finishes: Wood or chipboard can be painted directly. While this can create a nice finish, it doesn't offer the same protection or durability as HPL.
