- Directly coated particleboards: These boards are coated with a thin layer of melamine resin. They are less resistant and tend to wear after a few years. Thin plastic films: Thin PVC or PET films can be laminated onto particleboards or MDF to produce a decorative finish. These are generally less robust and less durable than HPL. Simple paint finishes: Wood or particleboards can be painted directly. While this can produce a nice finish, it does not offer the same protection or longevity as HPL.
