- Directly coated particle boards: These panels are coated with a thin layer of melamine resin directly. They are less resistant and will show signs of wear after a few years. Thin plastic films: Thin PVC or PET films can be laminated onto particleboards or MDF panels to create a decorative finish. These are generally less robust and durable than HPL. Simple paint finishes: Wood or particleboards can be painted directly. While this can produce a nice finish, it does not offer the same protection or longevity as HPL.
